In this new analysis, Opensignal has analyzed the 5G Experience in 11 of the largest cities in the Asia Pacific region. 5G will eventually become a ubiquitous mobile technology and is traveling down the same path as 4G to offering national service. However, for now 5G comes into its own in urban areas where operators have sought to serve the greatest number of users quickly and have used new 5G mid-band spectrum to help relieve congestion on existing 4G networks.  

In one of our previous insights, we analyzed Malaysia’s mobile data consumption and its effects on 4G Download Speed experienced by our users, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. We observed a substantial boost of mobile data usage among all Malaysian operators, matched with noticeably lowering 4G download speeds.

Opensignal looked at Singapore’s broadband market and analyzed our users’ real-world experience when they connected using a selection of the country’s major Internet Service Providers (ISPs).

In this analysis we look at how three measures of the mobile user experience — Download Speed Experience, Upload Speed Experience and Latency Experience — vary between international roamers from Singapore and domestic users in Malaysia. We analyzed the roaming experience of those 4G users that travelled from Singapore to Malaysia during 2019.

New mobile network operator, TPG, launched a new service at the start of 2019 in an unusual way. They have initially offered unlimited mobile data for 12 months, including unlimited mobile calls within Singapore and a range of other benefits. While marketed as a trial, the extensive services offered still raised the competitive pressure on existing players Singtel, M1 and StarHub.
