Almost a New Year, almost new maps!

As many of you will know, a few months ago we ran a survey to determine the best new design for our coverage maps. We were looking to improve the colour scheme, the granularity, and the colour of areas where we have no data. We had a lot of great feedback – thanks! –  and putting it all together, we’ve come up with a brand new design. Now here’s your chance to comment on it. The new maps are in public beta for the next two weeks, and after your input we’ll decide if tweaks are needed and when to make these new maps official.

Button to access new mapsSo how do you find them? The new maps are accessible via the legend on the current coverage maps. The new maps are fully functional, just redesigned, versions of the current maps, so you can search for specific locations, compare networks, and view coverage specifically for 2G, 3G, or 4G service.

Also, the coverage maps have been updated with data contributed until the 1st of December, so if you’ve been contributing data recently you should see it on the map now (this will be live on the new maps tomorrow).

Finally, the most important part is your feedback – please let us know whether these maps are clearer, easier to use, and are just better on the whole than the old coverage maps. Or not, as the case may be. For starters, you can vote on which map you like better in our 10-second survey. You can leave comments below or in our Forum, or you can contact us directly and we’ll answer any questions that you have.

    Data speed is more important than the signal strength
    The old map shows only the intensity of data collection in a region. The quality can be seen only on the legend. In the new map, the quality should be immediately evident about the color. This way is right but still not sufficient. A strong signal is green. It is stepped up to the weak signal in red. As a result, I see a map with mainly green measuring points. Red measurement results are hard to find.
    This result would make every network provider happy. But, it is not the quality of the coverage. The required signal strength should be prerequisite.
    The data transfer rate and data rate interest the user. You can not equalize a good 4 G wireless network with a good 2 G wireless network. In color, the quality of the transmission rate should be recognizable.

    The data protection allows zooming only up to a certain size. The map with own measures has no zoom limit. This is good. But there, the big yellow icons could be replaced but with transfer rates. Transfer rates of your own measures.

    Datengeschwindigkeit ist wichtiger als die Signalstärke
    Die alte Karte zeigt nur die Intensität der Datensammlung in einer Region. Die Qualität ist nur über die Legende ersichtlich. In der neuen Karte soll die Qualität gleich über die Farbe ersichtlich sein. Dieser Weg ist richtig aber noch nicht ausreichend. Ein starkes Signal ist Grün. Das wird abgestuft bis zum schwachen Signal in Rot. Als Ergebnis sehe ich eine Karte mit hauptsächlich grünen Messpunkten. Rote Messergebnisse sind kaum zu finden.
    Dieses Ergebnis wird jeden Netzwerkanbieter freuen. Es entspricht aber nicht die Qualität der Funkversorgung. Die erforderliche Signalstärke sollte Voraussetzung sein.
    Dem Nutzer interessieren die Datenübertragungsrate und die Datengeschwindigkeit. Ein gutes 4G Funknetzwerk kann man nicht mit einem guten 2G Funknetzwerk gleichsetzen. In der Farbe sollte man die Qualität der Übertragungsrate erkennen.
    Handy: Karte eigener Messwerte
    Der Datenschutz erlaubt das Zoomen nur bis zu einer bestimmten Größe. Die Karte mit eigenen Messwerten hat keine Zoom Grenze. Das ist gut so. Dort könnten die großen gelben Icons aber durch Übertragungsraten ersetzt werden. Übertragungsraten eigener Messwerte.
