In this new analysis, Opensignal has compared the roaming experience of our smartphone users on Switzerland’s mobile networks — Salt, Sunrise, and Swisscom, over the course of 180 days starting on October 1, 2022. We looked at the quality of roaming services seen by our Swiss users traveling abroad to neighboring countries — Austria, France, Germany, and Italy. We also analyzed the experience of roamers from these markets when they use their phones on Switzerland’s networks — and how it compares to the experience of Swiss domestic users.

In this Opensignal analysis, we have found that our urban users in Norway see average download speeds that are over 20% faster than those observed by their rural counterparts. However, the rural-urban divide for Download Speed Experience is smaller in Norway than in neighboring countries. Moreover, there is no statistically significant difference between the Availability measured by our Norwegian users in either urban or rural locations.

Italian operators first deployed their 5G commercial services in June 2019 and December 2020, while focusing their initial roll-outs mainly on densely populated urban areas, to maximize their return on investment. While this is a common global 5G approach, it comes at the potential cost of leaving rural users behind.

In this new analysis, Opensignal has analyzed the 5G Experience in 11 of the largest cities in the Asia Pacific region. 5G will eventually become a ubiquitous mobile technology and is traveling down the same path as 4G to offering national service. However, for now 5G comes into its own in urban areas where operators have sought to serve the greatest number of users quickly and have used new 5G mid-band spectrum to help relieve congestion on existing 4G networks.

Opensignal’s latest analysis of New Zealand’s mobile experience reveals notable disparities in our users’ experience between urban and rural areas on three major operators: Spark, 2degrees and Vodafone. However, the rural experience is clearly improving, likely as a result of government and operator efforts. But 5G threatens to complicate the rural-urban picture further, unless both government and operators use 5G to further boost the rural experience.

More than 18 months have passed since the U.S. and South Korea saw the first mobile 5G commercial launches in April 2019. However, 5G spectrum is still a scarce resource for many operators, who are looking to acquire more spectrum in upcoming auctions and repurpose some or all of the spectrum that they are currently using for 3G and/or 4G networks.
