In our previous insight, we observed that our users in Germany, Italy and the UK experienced significantly faster 5G average download speeds when they were also connected to additional amounts of 4G spectrum, through older 4G technology. To explore this topic further, Opensignal looked at South Korea’s mobile market, known for its advanced 5G deployments.

South Korea is the most advanced country for 5G adoption with 11.8m 5G subscriptions at the end of 2020 out of a population of 52m people (22.7%). The country’s three operators have deployed 166,250 5G base stations which is approximately 19% of the country’s 870,000 4G base stations.

For the first time, Opensignal has analyzed the experience of our 5G users across the three largest cities in South Korea, comparing the results on each major mobile operator. For each of the 5G measures, we have looked at the average real-world experience of our users, which makes the extremely high speeds we have seen even more impressive. Previously, we’ve seen South Korean users’ average 5G speeds were 5.6 times faster than 4G speeds.

We’ve looked at how the 5G experience compares in four leading countries — Australia, South Korea, the U.S. and the U.K. — across ten 5G operators that all launched 5G well over six months ago.
