The fastest cities in Mexico for mobile broadband are in the north

The city of Chihuahua has quite the namesake. It lends its name not only to the famous breed of miniature dog known for its outsized bark but also to the popular semi-soft cheese that originates from the surrounding dairyland. According to Opensignal's latest analysis of the 20 of the largest cities in Mexico, though, Chihuahua could just as well be synonymous with fast mobile broadband speeds. The city topped our chart in Download Speed Experience and was among the fastest in Upload Speed Experience.

Latin American cities’ 4G Download Speeds vary significantly round-the-clock

Opensignal has analyzed 4G Download Speeds experienced by our users on smartphones across six of the largest cities in Latin America: Bogotá, Buenos Aires, Lima, Mexico City, Santiago, and São Paulo. We discovered that our users in São Paulo enjoyed the fastest speeds with an average 4G Download Speed score of 21.3 Mbps, marginally faster than Mexico City by 0.3 Mbps. Meanwhile, our users in Buenos Aires experienced the slowest speeds, with average 4G Download Speeds of 16.2 Mbps.

Mexico's 3 biggest cities buck the trend of urban 4G inconsistency

Opensignal’s latest report on the 5G opportunity highlighted how smartphone users often experience wide fluctuations in 4G Download Speed throughout the day, and that speeds at the quietest hour can be several times faster than at the busiest hours. We also observed that speed fluctuations experienced in different cities of the same country are often very dissimilar. However, our analysis of the three largest cities in Mexico show remarkably similar speed fluctuations.

Canada and Bolivia lead the Americas in our video experience analysis

Now we're drilling down into the specifics of various regions, starting first with the Americas. We found that compared to Europe, the Americas didn't rate as highly on our video scale. OpenSignal tests show Telcel has the fastest upstream connections in Mexico

We put Mexico under the lens of our new experimental upload metric and found that in 4G, Telcel beats out both AT&T and Movistar, averaging upstream connections of 11.7 Mbps.

As 4G reach in Latin America improves, so does the consumer experience

Today, we're drilling down into a specific region, Latin America, to see how the 4G experience compares in the 14 Central, North and South American countries included in that report.
