Key points

Mobile latency improvements help Germany's challengers take on Telekom's dominance

Posted: Jan 24, 2019

According to OpenSignal's analysis of Latency Experience in Germany, there have been some notable improvements on the networks of some of the key operators over the second half of 2018. And these improvements are allowing Germany's other operators to challenge the dominance of market leader Telekom. Our Latency Experience metric is calculated as an average of the individual 3G and 4G latency measurements based on the proportion of time OpenSignal users spend connected to each network type. A lower score in this metric is a sign of a more responsive network.

Multiple operators across the globe hit simultaneously by Ericsson network outage

Posted: Dec 11, 2018

OpenSignal has identified that December 6th’s mobile network outage hit multiple operators at the same time across the globe.

Analyzing availability data for 2G, 3G and 4G mobile technologies across hundreds of networks, we found three operators where smartphone users experienced a significant and sudden drop in LTE availability: Mobifone in Vietnam; SoftBank in Japan; and O2 in the UK.

Stuttgart is often credited as the home of the automobile, and the west German city remains the home of some of Europe's most powerful cars including Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Daimler. But Stuttgart is now showing its power in another sector where speed matters, racing into pole position as OpenSignal's top city in Germany for 4G download and upload.

Meanwhile, our chart showing our 4G metrics winners in 10 of Germany's biggest cities was largely painted with Deutsche Telekom's signature shade of magenta.

OpenSignal’s UK tests show EE has the best video experience

OpenSignal's new State of Mobile Networks report for the U.K. shows that access to 4G signals is increasing at a rapid clip across the country, meaning more people have access to a fast mobile broadband connection more often and in more places. That's particularly good news for those partial to using their phones as miniature TV screens. In a recent analysis of U.K. mobile services, OpenSignal found the video streaming experience to be a high quality one across all four operators' 4G connections.

EE and 3 dominate regional speeds in Great Britain

Posted: Dec 06, 2017

In OpenSignal's September Mobile Networks Update for the UK, EE was the runaway winner of our nationwide 4G speed award in the UK. When we drill down the regional level, EE makes a similarly strong showing, but it faces some stiff competition from 3 in a few places. Following up on our UK report, we decided to take a closer look at 3, EE, O2 and Vodafone to see how their 4G performance stacked up in England's nine official regional divisions as well as in Scotland and Wales.

Measuring peak speed for UK operators

Posted: Sep 28, 2017

Today OpenSignal published its first Mobile Networks Update for the U.K., which shows that LTE accessibility is steadily improving across Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Apart from the update on our core mobile data metrics, OpenSignal decided to provide a little bit of extra analysis for this report. Specifically, we're applying our new peak speed metric to the U.K. to examine the optimal experience on 3, EE, O2 and Vodafone's 4G networks.
