South African networks see the worst 4G signal strength but fastest 4G download speeds at night

Posted: May 25, 2023

Opensignal analyzed how energy usage changes on South African networks throughout the day. We observe that South African operators use less spectrum and carrier bands at night, while the 4G signal strength is also the weakest at night. For the purpose of the analysis, we focus on 4G metrics, as only MTN and Vodacom have launched commercial mobile 5G services in South Africa.

Lack of 5G spectrum hurts Poland’s 5G experience

Posted: Apr 25, 2023

Poland compares poorly with other Central and Eastern markets for 5G experience. For 5G Video Experience, 5G Download Speed, and 5G Upload Speed Poland has the lowest average score out of the eight markets. Remarkably, the 5G download and upload speeds experienced by our Polish users are much slower — average 5G download speeds are just 77.8Mbps — than in other nearby international markets. Poland’s challenge is the small amount of new spectrum suitable for 5G services that is available for Polish operators.

Our users in DACH markets enjoy a superior mobile network experience on 5G than on 4G

Posted: Jun 22, 2022

In this new analysis, Opensignal looked at our users’ 5G mobile network experience in DACH markets — Austria, Germany and Switzerland — across eight metrics. We observed a substantial 4G to 5G uplift across all three markets in the speed and experiential metrics. Switzerland scores the highest in 5G Peak Download Speed Experience, 5G Upload Speed, 5G Games Experience and 5G Reach out of all of the DACH markets, while Germany lagged behind its neighbors in some categories, such as 5G Download Speed and 5G Availability.

How Colombia’s operators are re-using existing spectrum for modern 4G services

Posted: May 11, 2022

In this analysis, Opensignal has looked at how three national operators in Colombia use their spectrum holdings in one of the legacy 3G bands — 1900 MHz (band 2), also known as the PCS band. We observed that mobile operators have been shifting their use of this band from 3G to 4G technology and also have moved to larger channel widths for 4G connections which helps to boost the mobile experience of users.

Posted: May 11, 2022

Spectrum scarcity hampers mobile network experience in Sri Lanka

Posted: Dec 15, 2021

In our new analysis, Opensignal has observed that our smartphone users in Sri Lanka connected to 4G networks using a limited amount of mobile spectrum — ranging from 3 MHz to 20 MHz. This, linked to the scarcity of spectrum assigned to mobile operators in Sri Lanka, impacted the average 4G download speeds our users experienced. Also, we found out that some operators like Dialog or Airtel have been refarming the 2100 MHz band used for 3G to dedicate more spectrum assets to 4G connectivity.
