Faster 5G speeds helped by 4G spectrum bandwidth in South Korea

Posted: Sep 22, 2021

In our previous insight, we observed that our users in Germany, Italy and the UK experienced significantly faster 5G average download speeds when they were also connected to additional amounts of 4G spectrum, through older 4G technology. To explore this topic further, Opensignal looked at South Korea’s mobile market, known for its advanced 5G deployments.

A great 5G experience benefits from a strong 4G foundation in Germany, Italy & the UK

Opensignal analyzed the impact of different amounts of 5G and 4G spectrum on the overall 5G mobile experience of our users. Perhaps surprisingly, our research shows that users in Germany, Italy and the UK saw significantly faster 5G average download speeds when they were also connected to additional amounts of 4G spectrum, through older 4G technology.

Analyzing AT&T’s spectrum usage to understand its 5G rollout plans

Opensignal is investigating how different U.S. carriers have been using their spectrum holdings to launch 5G services. In this first analysis, we have looked into AT&T’s spectrum use of its 850MHz band, which the operator used to launch its low-band 5G service in December 2019, in order to shed light on AT&T’s 5G approach.

Operators’ spectrum use helps explain UK users’ 4G Download Speeds

In Opensignal’s latest U.K. national report we observed that users experienced widely different 4G Download Speeds on the four major mobile networks. EE led the group with a 4G Download Speed of 32.5 Mbps, more than 8 Mbps ahead of Vodafone (24.3 Mbps), 11 Mbps ahead of 3 (21.6 Mbps) and double the speed of O2 (15.8 Mbps). But why does users’ experience vary so much across the U.K.'s operators?

Rio de Janeiro: 4G Availability surges thanks to 700 MHz rollout

The infusion of the 700 MHz airwaves into operators’ 4G networks produced visible improvements in the national scores of our latest Brazil report as operators activated the new frequency band across Brazilian cities. However, we observed a trade-off between increased 4G networks’ reach and 4G Download Speeds.
