Swiss mobile roaming experience significantly differs from the domestic one

Posted: May 12, 2023

In this new analysis, Opensignal has compared the roaming experience of our smartphone users on Switzerland’s mobile networks — Salt, Sunrise, and Swisscom, over the course of 180 days starting on October 1, 2022. We looked at the quality of roaming services seen by our Swiss users traveling abroad to neighboring countries — Austria, France, Germany, and Italy. We also analyzed the experience of roamers from these markets when they use their phones on Switzerland’s networks — and how it compares to the experience of Swiss domestic users.

The 5G Experience in APAC’s biggest cities

In this new analysis, Opensignal has analyzed the 5G Experience in 11 of the largest cities in the Asia Pacific region. 5G will eventually become a ubiquitous mobile technology and is traveling down the same path as 4G to offering national service. However, for now 5G comes into its own in urban areas where operators have sought to serve the greatest number of users quickly and have used new 5G mid-band spectrum to help relieve congestion on existing 4G networks.

However, the rural experience is clearly improving, likely as a result of government and operator efforts. But 5G threatens to complicate the rural-urban picture further, unless both government and operators use 5G to further boost the rural experience.

Switzerland’s topography hardly impacts mobile experience

Switzerland is moving fast into the 5G era. Despite the challenges posed by its geography, including two mountain ranges — the Alps and the Jura — which combined cover about 70% of the territory, two mobile operators are aiming for nationwide 5G population coverage by year’s end, and the third will likely launch 5G service soon.

State of Mobile USA: Quantifying the bar for 5G to beat

There’s lots of room for improvement but only a new technology like 5G is likely to lead to a step-change improvement in the mobile network experience.
