OpenSignal is the global standard for measuring real-world mobile network experience.
OpenSignal is a mobile analytics company bringing transparency to the wireless industry by independently measuring, analyzing and reporting the real-world mobile network experience users receive in the places where they live, work and travel.
Using billions of measurements collected 24/7 from tens of millions of smartphones around the world, OpenSignal analyzes real-world mobile network experience at the largest scale and frequency in the wireless industry: by operator, by country, regionally and worldwide.
OpenSignal believes that measuring how the network performs directly through users’ eyes is key to building better wireless networks.
OpenSignal’s insights are used across the industry by mobile operators, telecoms regulators, equipment manufacturers and analysts.
OpenSignal combines the power of smartphone technology with big data analytics and rigorous scientific analysis to offer unmatched levels of mobile network experience insights to the wireless industry.
OpenSignal collects 2 billion individual measurements each day from tens of millions of smartphones and thousands of phone models. Other methodologies:
Simulate users’ potential experience versus measuring what users actually experience.
Are unable to collect measurements inside buildings, where 70% of mobile phone usage occurs.
Do not measure true end-to-end user experience, and therefore do not mirror the actual behavior of users.
Only collect user-initiated (foreground) speed test measurements, versus collecting a range of measurements 24/7 through both automated (background) and user-initiated (foreground) tests.
OpenSignal’s State of Mobile Network reports are the definitive guide to measuring and analysing mobile network experience worldwide.
The company publishes 50+ reports annually, covering 75+ countries across six continents and also publishes hundreds of network coverage maps.
The key metrics published in OpenSignal’s reports include:
LTE Availability: The proportion of time users have an LTE connection available to them on each operator’s network.
Download Speed: The average download speed for each operator on 3G and LTE connections. An additional Overall Speed metric shows the average download speed users experience across both connections, factoring in the availability of each network technology.
Latency: The delay data experiences as it makes a round trip through the network, on both 3G and LTE networks.
OpenSignal is headquartered in London, with offices around the world.
OpenSignal’s objective is to report as accurately as possible the typical, real-world mobile experience as recorded by our users.
We strongly believe that:
The only thing that matters when assessing network performance is how it is experienced by subscribers themselves. This is best understood by capturing the real world experience of users as they interact with the network in the places where they actually live, work and travel.
By making this information transparently available, we address the important need for consumers to understand the most important aspect of network performance relative to them, namely how it translates to their user experience.
