Key Findings

Smart Axiata makes good progress on 4G Availability

The data from our users indicates that Smart Axiata has made a strong push in terms of 4G Availability, since our last report. Our users on its network saw their 4G Availability jump by 5.8 percentage points to a healthy 87.1%. Opensignal also found that Cellcard and Metfone have made healthy gains in this regard — with increases of 2.9 and 4.7 percentage points, respectively.

Cambodia’s operators make solid gains on Upload Speed Experience

According to our user data, all three operators have made impressive advances in Upload Speed Experience since our last report. Cellcard boosted its score by 2.3 Mbps (nearly 70%) to 5.6 Mbps and retained the top spot. Smart Axiata stayed in second position, but nearly doubled its score, with its users seeing their average speeds increase from 2.5 Mbps to 4.8 Mbps. However, Metfone users saw the biggest jump — from 1.6 Mbps to 4.4 Mbps.

Metfone zooms to the top for Latency Experience...

Despite coming last in our previous report for Latency Experience, this time our users found that Metfone offered the best experience — improving from a sluggish 78.6ms to 59.6ms. In contrast, our users found that the previous award holder, Smart Axiata, has seen a slight weakening in user experience. While Cellcard made gains (a 5.1ms improvement in Latency Experience), they weren’t enough for the operator to take the second spot.

...and sees big gains in other areas

Metfone has also made great strides in a number of other areas — namely Download Speed Experience, Upload Speed Experience and Video Experience, with the former rising from 2.8 Mbps to 6.0 Mbps.

Introduction

Given Smart Axiata’s rapid progress in terms of 4G Availability, it will be interesting to see if it can maintain its momentum and breach the 90% mark in our next report. However, judging from our user data, the country’s operators have made significant progress in other areas, with Upload Speed Experience and Video Experience being the most significant.

Turning to Download Speed Experience, user data indicates a statistical tie between Cellcard and Smart Axiata for the second report running and Cellcard remains the only Cambodian operator network on which our users observed 4G Download Speeds in excess of 10 Mbps.

Our users across all three operators experienced a Fair Video Experience. The Voice App Experience was slightly more variable with Metfone falling into the Very Poor category, while Cellcard and Smart Axiata do slightly better, given their Poor ranking. This shows that much work still needs to be done in both areas, despite some improvement on the results seen in our last report.

According to Opensignal data, Metfone has become the second operator network in Cambodia on which our LTE users could connect to 4G services more than 80% of the time. The operator has also made impressive gains in other areas, moving from last for Latency Experience in our previous report to first, while more than doubling its Upload Speed Experience score — from an admittedly low starting point of 1.6 Mbps to a more healthy 4.4 Mbps. The Download Speed Experience seen by our users on Metfone’s network rose from 2.8 Mbps (the kind of speed we typically see from 3G-only operators) to 6.0 Mbps. The operator’s users also saw its Video Experience score increase from 28.5 (Poor) to 48.9 (Fair). Given Metfone’s rate of progress, Cambodia’s mobile market shows every sign of becoming increasingly competitive

Opensignal measures the real-world experience of consumers on mobile networks in the places they live, work and travel.

We continually adapt our methodology to best represent the true experience of smartphone users. Therefore, comparisons of the results to past reports should be considered indicative only.

For every metric we calculate statistical confidence intervals indicated on our graphs. When confidence intervals overlap, our measured results are too close to declare a winner. In those cases, we show a statistical draw. For this reason, some metrics have multiple winners.

In our bar graphs we represent confidence intervals as boundaries on either sides of graph bars. In our supporting-metric charts we show confidence intervals as +/- numerical values.
