Introduction
Given Smart Axiata’s rapid progress in terms of 4G Availability, it will be interesting to see if it can maintain its momentum and breach the 90% mark in our next report. However, judging from our user data, the country’s operators have made significant progress in other areas, with Upload Speed Experience and Video Experience being the most significant.
Turning to Download Speed Experience, user data indicates a statistical tie between Cellcard and Smart Axiata for the second report running and Cellcard remains the only Cambodian operator network on which our users observed 4G Download Speeds in excess of 10 Mbps.
Our users across all three operators experienced a Fair Video Experience. The Voice App Experience was slightly more variable with Metfone falling into the Very Poor category, while Cellcard and Smart Axiata do slightly better, given their Poor ranking. This shows that much work still needs to be done in both areas, despite some improvement on the results seen in our last report.
According to Opensignal data, Metfone has become the second operator network in Cambodia on which our LTE users could connect to 4G services more than 80% of the time. The operator has also made impressive gains in other areas, moving from last for Latency Experience in our previous report to first, while more than doubling its Upload Speed Experience score — from an admittedly low starting point of 1.6 Mbps to a more healthy 4.4 Mbps. The Download Speed Experience seen by our users on Metfone’s network rose from 2.8 Mbps (the kind of speed we typically see from 3G-only operators) to 6.0 Mbps. The operator’s users also saw its Video Experience score increase from 28.5 (Poor) to 48.9 (Fair). Given Metfone’s rate of progress, Cambodia’s mobile market shows every sign of becoming increasingly competitive
